Our mission — Be a responsive, effective search and rescue (SAR) group providing qualified ground searchers and SAR management in support of local, regional and national missing person search efforts.

We’ll meet at 10:00am (05/30) at Reeds Gap Parking Lot (corner of route 664 and Blue Ridge Parkway). This is just south of I-64 (Rockfish Gap on Afton Mt) on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We’ll be hiking to the area around Maupin field shelter (about 1.7 mile hike – not far from Three Ridges).
We’ll have a discussion on fire building, knife safety, site selection and shelters. We’ll also get instructed on how to set Paiute Deadfall traps (don’t worry – no animals will be hurt in these demonstrations). There will be a chance to share thoughts on someone’s first experience in building one of these shelters and words of wisdom for first timers.
The key is to use what we have in our SAR packs. However, the one exception for this weekend will be food and drink. The point of this exercise is to learn – it’s hard to learn on an empty stomach, so make sure to bring lunch and dinner for Saturday and at least breakfast for Sunday. We’ll have time to gather around the campfire Saturday night to share stories.
